The events of Into the Breach take place in a distant future in which mankind is engaged in a conflict with a horde of enormous creatures known collectively as the Vek. The player takes control of warriors that pilot enormous mechs that may be customized with a wide selection of weaponry, armor, and other accessories in order to engage in combat with the enemy. The game has a turn-based combat system, which gives the player the ability to coordinate the activities of their squad in reaction to opponent moves and acts that help to telegraph the enemies’ strikes.
During combat, the player commands three distinct mechs to fight against the Vek. Prior to each battle, the player is briefed on the mission for that map and given a certain amount of turns to accomplish that objective. It is possible for extra goals to be offered, but the primary purpose of every map is to defend civilian structures that are responsible for maintaining the electrical system that is responsible for maintaining the mechs. In the event that a civilian structure is damaged or destroyed, the strength of the electricity grid is reduced.
The Vek armies will advance across the board and engage in combat at the end of each turn. The player is provided with information on the amount of movements that the Vek unit is able to take as well as its current health status. Additionally, the player is informed of the direction in which the Vek unit intends to launch its assault. Each round is followed by the emergence of brand fresh Vek. Following this, the player will have the opportunity to maneuver each mech and fire one of its weapons in an effort to either kill the Vek unit, force the Vek off a line of attack, avert an attack, intercept freshly spawning Vek, or stop an attack on civilian infrastructure.
In combat, mechs may only sustain a certain amount of damage before they become useless, although players have the option of pausing the action of their mech for a turn in order to heal part of that damage. Damage sustained in combat is otherwise entirely restored between levels. Mech pilots that are successful in killing a Vek are awarded experience points, which may be put toward the purchase of additional abilities. It has been said that the gameplay of Into the Breach is comparable to that of the board game chess since it focuses less on completely dominating the adversarial forces and more on maintaining position control and sacrificing troops in order to acquire a greater advantage.
